Driver License and ID Card

Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

The Tax Collector of Indian River County provides full driver license services (including computer testing and road tests).  As an agent for the State of Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the Tax Collector must follow the procedures set forth in the Florida State Statutes and Administrative Rules

As of January 1, 2010 Florida law requires more proof of a driver’s identity.  The new rules are part of the Federal Real ID Act of 2005 by Congress out of concern for the security of our nation.

Those wishing to obtain a new license, legally change their name, or immediately replace a lost or stolen license or ID card are required to visit a driver license office and show proof of; identification, social security number, legal name changes, and proof of residential address.

For those wishing to review the Driver License handbook, see Handbooks & Manuals.

What to Bring?

Customers must visit an office with the required documents if:

  • They are applying for their first driver license or ID card;
  • Their current credential expires, their last renewal was completed through the mail or online and their current driver license or ID card does not have a star in the upper corner; or
  • They have legally changed their name since their last issuance (e.g., by marriage, divorce or court order).
    • The name(s) on their marriage certificate(s) or court order must show how their birth name was changed to their current name.
    • If their name has changed multiple times and the document they provide shows their current name and their birth name, they need only bring the final name change document.
    • If the final marriage certificate does not have both names, they will need to bring all documents that show how their name changed from birth name to current name.
